Social Media Guidance

There are dozens of different social media platforms available now, and whilst we as adults and parents may use them on a daily basis, do we know and understand the potential effects of our children using these. Below we have gathered a range of guides from 'National Online Safety'. These will be able to keep you informed and familiar with what your children may be using.

Please remember that most social media platforms have age restrictions many of these are rated for use by children 13 or older. So do check before letting your child download a new app. If it's an app you are unfamiliar with or even one you use regularly, take the time to talk to your child about it and highlight your need to keep them safe. Do be open with your child and be available to listen to them if they have any problems or concerns.

A game’s age rating can be used by adults to make an informed choice as to whether or not a game is suitable for their child. The PEGI (Pan European Game Information) system rates games and, instead of indicating the level of ability required to physically play a game, it indicates the suitability of content for that age group. 3, 7, 12, 16 and 18 are the labels that can be awarded to games and a variety of content descriptions such as violence, bad language and fear are used to further clarify why the label was assigned.

In the guide, you'll find tips on a number of potential risks such as inappropriate content, peer pressure and online spending.

But it’s not something that ought to be left to chance. It’s important that you – and your children – learn how to operate your (or their own) phone’s emergency functions. Depending on the make and model, your phone could provide first responders with vital medical information and notify your nominated contacts of your location. Most important of all, just a few clicks of a button can put you in touch with the emergency services inside a matter of seconds.
